Healthy Lifestyle Starter Kit

I like to consider myself a somewhat healthy person. I workout¬†to improve my overall health – physically and mentally. I fuel my body with all the essential nutrients by eating and drinking well. And I don’t deprive myself of all the goodness in the world. It’s a balance. I don’t believe in the word “diet” because in my opinion, I don’t see it as a long-term thing. I mean even the word contains “die” in it. Sooooo…¬†¬†My favourite “health motto” would be “Eat clean to stay Fit. Have a burger t stay sane.” ¬†–¬†Gigi Hadid.¬†

If your New Years Resolution is to get healthier, here are some tips and tricks to get started:

Water

Water is so important for your body. 60% of your bodyweight is water! Not only does it ensure that our cells function at its optimum, it also:

  • Increases metabolism
  • Keeps that beautiful glow on your skin making you look younger
  • Regulates body temperature
  • Helps curb cravings
  • Eliminates toxins
  • Decreases fatigue

Need I explain more?

It is recommended to drink at least 2L of water a day. I know right,¬†that’s a lot! But here are some tricks:

  • Have a glass of water first thing in the morning
  • Have a glass of water before every meal and even during meals!
  • Order water instead of sugary drinks when you’re eating out
  • Make sure to drink every 30 minutes
  • Take it slow. Day by day

Exercise

I absolutely love running. I¬†think it’s a great way to relax and there’s always this sense of achievement once you’ve reached a goal. But if you hate running, there are plenty of¬†other forms of cardio you can find online.

I also incorporate some strength training into my workout. I designate a body part to each day and do a couple of minutes on that body part. I use weights, resistance bands and my bodyweight. It always leaves me feeling¬†“tight and toned” afterwards. My favourite body part to work are my abssss. You can check out my ab routine here!

If you are short of time, try doing a HIIT workout. These type of workouts are bursts of energy followed by a very very very short rest. It only lasts for 20 minutes but trust me, it does the job.

Breakfast

Breakfast is one of the most important meals of the day. Not only does it set you up for the entire day, it also gets your metabolism¬†running again and prevents you from overeating during lunch or your next meal. Snacks

It’s kind of funny how snacking every 2-3 hours actually helps in maintaining weight. This is because it prevents your metabolism from slowing down. So in actual fact, you’re speeding it up.

However, don’t reach out to¬†unhealthy stuff like chocolate or chips or ice cream. Instead, get some fruits or nuts or an all natural snack bar! But make sure each snacks stays between 100 – 200 calories.

Count

1 2 3 4 5 once I caught a fish alive 6 7 8 9 10 then i let it go again… (get it? It’s a song lol) No? OK…

But i’m trying to say, I like counting my macros. I don’t count calories… well I used to and still do sometimes but I focus more on¬†macros e.g. proteins, fats and carbs. I log my food on¬†myfitnesspal. This way,¬†I find it really helpful in visualising what i’m lacking and what I need to cut down on. It’s a brilliant way of helping you keep track of your daily food intake and help achieve those goals of yours.

Indulge

I firmly believe in giving into your cravings. If you feel like eating cake, have a glass of water to see whether you’re still craving it after. If you are… EAT IT! Never ever ever¬†ignore your cravings. It’ll only “increase” your cravings and make you sad. And before you know it, you’ll be having the whole cake! We wouldn’t want that to happen would we?!

If you’ve been eating healthy and doing all the good stuff, why not¬†give yourself a break and treat yourself! A slice of cake won’t kill you! But depriving yourself will!

Don’t skip meals

This also comes under “Snacks”¬†.

If you skip meals, you’ll only be slowing down your metabolism. Starvation mode will be activated and you’ll end up losing muscle mass not fat. That’s not what we want.

But i’m not saying you should have a full meal even if you’re not hungry. Just have some nuts or snacks to prevent a laggy metabolism.

Get out!

Our lives are so busy these days that we forget to just take a step back and breathe.

Get together with your friends for lunch! Attend a sport class with your friends! Go shopping! Do anything! Just get out and enjoy life!

Life is so much more than just work work work work work (Cue Rihanna’s song). Life is about surrounding yourself with good people and good food¬†and having fun!! Don’t stress out about what’s happening now. Ask yourself this “Will it matter 10 years down the line?” No? Then don’t stress about it. Yes? Uhhhhh then maybe you should start picking it up…
